The Volunteer Centre Western Isles is an independent local charity with offices based in Barra, Stornoway, Northern Lewis, Harris and Uist.       Our Barra office is located at Am Bothan in Northbay and is staffed on a part- time basis by Karen Mackinnon.   The Volunteer Centre Western Isles is part of the national network of 32 volunteer centres which exist across Scotland. We work closely with our network colleagues and Volunteer Development Scotland to improve the quality of our services, keep up to date with volunteering issues and act as a two way link between local volunteering and the Scottish Government.   We provide information, advice and support to • Individuals interested in Volunteering • Volunteer managers • Voluntary groups, clubs and organisations • Private and Public sector organisations and companies.   Contact Karen on; 01871 890775 or email her at barra@volunteeringwesternisles.co.uk   Volunteer Centre Western Isles: Actively encouraging, supporting and promoting volunteering.   Some of the ways the Volunteer Centre has helped on Barra:   Encouraging young people to get involved in their community – and get recognition for their efforts! Many young people in Barra have achieved their Millennium Volunteer Awards, with help from our staff.   The Millennium Volunteer Awards were presented by Alasdair Allan MSP, accompanied by Angus MacNeil MP. The Awards are given to volunteers aged 16-25 in recognition of 50, 100 and 200 hours of volunteering. The young volunteers from the Barra Lifeboat Station are the first RNLI volunteers in Scotland to receive their MV Awards.   The Volunteer Centre has actively recruited many volunteers over the years, and has contributed to the great events that go on in the island. Here are just a few of the organizations we have worked with: Giving help and support to Feis Barraidh; recruiting young volunteers for Barrafest; working with the Zambia Exchange and recruiting volunteers to do a range of tasks; supporting the Football Club and helping them to get established again.   The Volunteer Centre is always pleased to hear from individuals wanting to find something interesting to get involved in; there is so much going on and plenty of organisations who would like some extra help. And we are here to help organisations in a variety of ways, not only recruiting.   Just get in touch!
