Tigh Challum Mhicheal

Tigh Challum Mhicheal

Tigh Challum Mhicheal is a refurbished croft house on the tranquil island of Vatersay, situated on a working croft away from the village, with an enclosed garden area.  The house faces east looking onto a large area of unfenced machair (open grass meadow), the back of the house is on to a fenced area planted with potatoes, barley and various other crops, where corncrakes can be heard calling during the summer. It is therefore very important that gates are always closed and fences are not climbed, cows love young crops and can spot an open gate at an amazing distance.

Triagh Deas is a very quiet beach facing the south looking to Sandray, Pabbay, Mingulay and Barra Head, you will find it 400m along the track from the house.  To get to Bagh Bhatersaidh you go back along the track to the junction and turn left. It is about 5 minutes walk.  Information about walks in the immediate area are in the house.

Directions

To find the house you turn left at the top of the hill as you come off the Oban ferry, drive approx 2 km until you reach a left turn at the bottom of a steep hill sign posted Bhatersaidh (Vatersay).  This road takes you past the War memorial at the top of the hill, down across the causeway where you follow the road to the right, care is needed on these single track roads you must pull over to the left if you are closest to a passing place when there is an oncoming car, or be happy to reverse back to it. Driving on the verge if there is one is very risky as they
tend to collapse or be hiding a large ditch! Remain on this road enjoying the scenery past the plane memorial and the beautiful Bagh Bhatersaidh (a long stretch of golden beach with calm turquoise water). When you arrive at the village turn left at the T junction past the red phone box on your left, across a cattle grid then left onto a gravel/sand track, this will lead you to the house which is on the right hand side. Parking is on the left of the road opposite the house. It will take you approx 20 minutes to drive from Castlebay to the house.
